Ortelius maps of salzbvrc6/1/2023 Basically he is more of a publisher than a scholar. And so he also made the acquaintance of another great man of his time, Gerhard Mercator (1512-1594), who encouraged him to draw cards and to make maps of the most varied of countries. His first cartographic work of his own is a large 8-sheet map of the world that appears in Antwerp in 1564. This is followed by a two-sheet map of Egypt (1565) and another of Asia (1567). The great achievement of Ortelius, who was one of the most famous European cartographers of his time, and the enthusiastic reception of his theater, mark a decisive turning point in the history of the world map. The new path is mapped out with the Theatrum. For the general view of the world, the appearance of Ortelius-Theatrum is important insofar as it emphatically confirms that America is a completely independent continent, which is also not connected to the Asian mainland mass at its northern tip. Ortelius was the first to come up with the idea of producing a handy collection of reliable maps, all kept in the same format and only by the same author for each country. These sheets could also be bound into a book for easy storage and use. Mercator, who also realized the idea of a world atlas from 1569, persuaded his friend to publish the famous Theatrum Orbis Terrarrum. Ortelius collected, traveled, corresponded and negotiated for 10 years before he could have his work printed in the best European printing house (Plantijn / Amsterdam). In addition to technical difficulties, Ortelius had to submit to the political / religious conditions, since maps were also subject to strict scrutiny during the Inquisition. Biblical scenes are pleasant, portraits of outstanding Catholics are welcome, but not family coats of arms or other emblems that could be politically suspect. On May 20, 1570, his first edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first collection of maps in book form, was published, financed and edited by Gillis Hooftman, an Antwerp merchant, banker and shipowner. Atlases did not yet have this name at that time. This collection was published between 15 in 42 editions and in 7 languages: Latin, German, Dutch, French, Spanish, English and Italian. Unlike his professional colleagues, he clearly referenced the sources of his maps and texts. The work contains, among other things, an illustration of the world known until 1492 and was therefore already looking back at the time the map was created. The name Austria is first handed down in its Old High German form Ostarrichi from the year 996. ![]() In 1156 Austria became an independent duchy in the Holy Roman Empire.

There remains no wrong choice in protagonist, as the choice simply gives players different interactions and deeper looks into characters that may be missed during the alternative route. Feedy frenzy plant vs solar beam6/1/2023 ![]() “You only have four or five months here of restaurant business the rest is hanging on by your fingernails. A majority of restaurants in Ashland are unique as they are independently owned and serve a highly educated clientele that requires a sophisticated standard to meet.” Katharine Flanagan “There is an art to serving the duality of audiences, including 300,000 visitors and 20,000 residents, along with mastering the seasonality and bringing it to life with access to fresh local produce, paired with the amazing wines and brews. Most people who live here come from a big city. “We’re doing Old World food with no shortcuts. “We’ve tripled our pastrami sales from the day we opened,” McMillan says, adding that the key to a successful restaurant in Ashland is to work hard, connect with your customers, and offer local, free-range, and seasonal ingredients at a reasonable price. Business has really taken off, and it’s elbow room only one rainy Thursday afternoon. Sammich, which has only been open for 10 months, is in a difficult-to-find location a mile away from downtown, where another restaurant (The Hot Spot) failed. McMillan is a blustery food enthusiast who has decorated her noisy, crowded eatery with Chicago Bulls paraphernalia and who forbids ketchup on Italian beef (“I’ll be kicked out of Chicago!”). Melissa McMillan and Chandra Corwin, co-owners of Sammich, a Chicago-style sandwich shop that smokes its own pastrami (which takes six days), agree. “If you do that, tourists will definitely find you because tourists find everything.” “You really have to appeal to the locals and have things that people who are in the area like,” Boulton says. So Boulton and her landlord decided to invest in a $34,000 remodel to concentrate on the lunch crowd. At the same time, Boulton & Son’s high-concept organic lunch options (house-cured ham with local pears served on homemade sourdough house-cured chorizo and white bean soup with kale grown in the Applegate) were so popular they always sold out. Boulton and her husband originally opened a butcher shop, but the business required tremendous overhead, including five full-time employees to process the meat, and they quickly started losing money. Restaurateurs must appeal to year-round residents, which includes more than 6,500 college students at Southern Oregon University, and they must offer food at a price point that locals can afford, or generate enough revenue during the prime tourist season (April through August) to weather the leaner winter months.Įlisa Boulton, who trained at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and is co-owner of the Lunch Show, which opened the first week of April, has found that knowing your niche is really important. Indeed, Ashland’s new businesses face unique regional challenges. “Having a successful restaurant in Ashland takes knowing what draws the culinary traveler to Ashland, along with what invites the Ashland resident to dine with you,” says Katharine Flanagan, director of the Ashland Visitors & Convention Bureau. Among the new arrivals: NW Raw, a raw juice and salad bar on Ashland’s main street Stonetop Pizza, a late-night pizza and milkshake delivery-only joint, and Oberon’s Tavern, a noisy, whimsical tavern on the Ashland Plaza, where customers sit on bar stools shaped like mushrooms and are served fanciful brews and pub grub by waiters dressed in Renaissance costumes. With research indicating that more than one in four restaurants fail or change ownership within the first year, and that 60% of restaurants fail within five years, the odds that a restaurant will succeed in Ashland just aren’t that good.īut every visitor who comes to this city of fewer than 20,000 year-round residents - as well as all the locals who live here - has to eat, and a half dozen new restaurants have opened within the past year or so, with two more coming soon. Indeed, the turnover in the restaurant business in Ashland, according to Beasy McMillan, a self-described food anthropologist who has started 20 restaurants in the area since 1980, is even higher than the national average. While 300,000 tourists a year flock to Ashland to enjoy Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s nine-month season (“Stay four days, see four plays” is a town motto), indulge in European-style boutique shopping with no sales tax, and bask in Southern Oregon’s good weather and outdoor recreation, no one visits Ashland specifically for the food. The actual book definition of vegetarian rather matches with vegan ("just plants"), but in common language vegetarian = milk and eggs are allowed, vegan = no animal stuff at all. In real life, vegetarian usually means ovo-lacto-vegetarian (so no meat but milk and eggs are ok) and vegan means no animal products at all. So either the description of Meat eating - precept is wrong or the eating of eggs is bugged.įor Part 2 I assume that eggs are bugged and milk and eggs are ok to eat for believers in the "no meat" precept. On the other hand, since milk eating /drinking doesn't give the debuff, this might just be a bug. Since eggs are listed as animal products and not meat, they should not give the "I ate meat debuff". Also, the game clearly puts meat and other animal products in different categories in cooking, namely: Meat, Vegetarian, Animal products. The game clearly states in the description: Eating meat is evil. chicken eggs (either raw or in a meal), they do get the "I ate meat debuff" When they drink milk / eat a meal cooked with milk, they don't get the "ate meat" debuff. For playtesting I started with milk and unfert. I currently have 3 crashlanders with the belief Animal Personhood and Meat Eating set to abhorrent. Part 1: What counts as "meat" to trigger the debuff from the precept? While I love the inclusion of Animal Personhood as a belief, it feels a bit confusing and not properly tested.
